When to visit Tanzania

Tanzania is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on what you want to experience. The long dry season, from June to October, is ideal for classic safaris when wildlife gathers around water sources and the Great Migration fills the northern plains. From November to May, the landscape turns lush with the rains, offering quieter parks, striking scenery, and the unforgettable spectacle of the wildebeest calving season in the southern Serengeti. Coastal areas like Zanzibar and Pemba remain warm throughout the year, with the clearest seas between December and March.

Tanzania in January

January is a fantastic month to visit Tanzania. The short rains have just ended, leaving behind clear skies, fresh greenery, and excellent conditions for safaris. The southern Serengeti bursts with life as the wildebeest calving season begins, drawing predators and creating some of the most dramatic wildlife moments of the year. The landscapes are lush and full of young animals, making it a great time for photography.

Parks like Tarangire and Ngorongoro Crater also offer rewarding game drives, though animals are more spread out than in the dry season. The coastal regions, including Zanzibar, Pemba, and Mafia, enjoy warm weather and calm seas perfect for diving, snorkeling, and beach relaxation.

Tanzania in February

February is one of the most beautiful and rewarding months to visit Tanzania. The short rains are long gone, leaving sunny days and clear skies across the country. In the southern Serengeti, the wildebeest calving season reaches its peak as thousands of newborns take their first steps on the open plains. This attracts large numbers of predators, making it one of the best times to witness dramatic wildlife encounters.

The scenery is lush and green, and the roads are still accessible. It’s also an excellent month for photographers, with soft light and vibrant landscapes. Along the coast, Zanzibar enjoys warm weather and calm seas, creating ideal conditions for diving, snorkeling, and dhow sailing.
