Overview

Ngorongoro Crater, often referred to as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Africa’s premier safari destinations. Nestled within the larger Ngorongoro Conservation Area in northern Tanzania, this massive volcanic caldera, measuring about 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) in diameter, is the world’s largest intact caldera and a haven for wildlife. The crater’s floor is a rich, diverse ecosystem where some 25,000 large animals, including the Big Five—lions, elephants, leopards, buffaloes, and the critically endangered black rhino—roam freely.

The Ngorongoro Crater offers a year-round safari experience that is unparalleled, with its lush grasslands, acacia forests, and soda lakes teeming with flamingos. The crater’s unique geography creates a natural enclosure that supports a high density of wildlife, making it one of the best places in Africa to see a wide variety of species in a relatively small area. The presence of permanent water sources ensures that animals stay in the crater throughout the year, providing exceptional game viewing opportunities.
